Explaining Christmas
Families
On November 19, 2017, Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill's parishioner Dagobert Soergel took to the pulpit to announce the kickoff of the annual Christmas Families drive. Below is his announcement:
I am Dagobert Soergel, here to tell you about Christmas Families
Jesus Christ matters. Jesus matters when he appears as a three-year old who has little1 but has her hope, her spirit rekindled when on Christmas morning she unwraps a shiny new toy to grasp in her hands, a toy that will help her learn and grasp the world in her mind. Who makes it happen? We do. By serving Christ we make it happen. We invest in a child to see the investment multiply in her growth and success.2 We change the world, one child at a time.
You can sign up to provide nice, lasting, educational gifts to the children in a family, starting today. You can give a gift to inspire - an art kit to spawn creativity, a science kit to start a budding researcher, a basketball to foster a healthy body for a healthy mind, a doll for role playing, a Lego or Duplo set to draw out the architect within. See the details in the service leaflet or ask us at the sign-up boards.
To keep the bicycle ministry going at full strength, we urgently need used bicycles and, most importantly, helpers to fix them up. Learn a new skill. Talk to Josh Miller <[email protected]> or see the Immanuel website.
While we take care of our neighbor, let it be a reminder to us that we are called, each one of us, to work for equality for all of God's people in an unequal society, we are called to help change a system that has created, perpetuates, and even increases disparity in our society.
In Christ's name
Amen
1 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ From Matthew 25:31-46, the New Testament Reading for Sunday, November 26.
2 Matthew 25:14-30 The parable of the servants entrusted with money and those investing it to multiply getting praise. New Testament reading Sunday, November 19.
