FAQs about Immanuel’s annual Shrine Mont weekend
What is Shrine Mont?
- Shrine Mont is a conference and retreat center located in Orkney Springs, a community in western Shenandoah County, Virginia. It’s about 2 and a half hours from our church buildings in Alexandria.
- Every one is welcome, but not everyone will go! We will still offer church services at Immanuel on Sunday.
- There are no mandatory activities at Shrine Mont, although we do encourage and hope you will participate in our Sunday morning worship and our shared meals. We will also offer a forum for adults before the church service on Sunday.
- All of God’s children are welcome at Shrine Mont – and Immanuel certainly agrees! There is no child care provided by Immanuel, but we do have many kid-friendly activities. We anticipate parents will use their judgment on parental supervision needed, especially for activities like the pool, hikes, etc.
- Immanuel’s blessed with many talented musicians who share their gifts with all of us. This happens formally during the worship service, and informally on Saturday and Sunday evening, usually at the Crenshaw building.
- With your lodging, you will have access to Shrine Mont’s three meals served each day. These meals are served family style, in the Dining Hall. They do their best to offer vegetarian and vegan options, as well as consider food allergies. If you have very specific needs, please let Kathryn know when you register.
- Otherwise, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages are allowed – must be 21 to consume alcohol), and many of the houses we share have refrigerators. Most don’t have a kitchen.
- Immanuel reserves housing “up the hill,” which means we are split among different cabins (map of Shrine Mont is here) - we usually stay in cabins beginning around number 33 (Peterkin Cottage) on the map.
- You can request a double room or a single. If you request a single room, you will be alone in the room and have your own bathroom. For most double occupancy rooms, you will have an ensuite bathroom. In some of the houses, a bathroom may be shared from several small (usually one person rooms), and it will not be ensuite.
- The houses do not have air-conditioning, but they do have heat and fans are usually available in the room or house. The bathrooms have toilet paper, a towel and washcloth per bed, and each bed will have a pillow, sheets, and comforter. You are welcome to bring extras, and when you are assigned housing, you'll know the bed sizes assigned also.
