The Rev. Sarah Spurlock Biggs is thrilled to combine her love of intergenerational faith formation and our beautiful Episcopal liturgy in her role as Associate Rector at Immanuel.
Her favorite part of ministry is building community and helping people discover and live into the gifts and callings God has placed within them. She is passionate about equipping lay leaders for ministry and fostering communities where people can grow in faith, serve others, and deepen their relationship with God. She is particularly interested in the ways our mental health and beliefs shape how we love and live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ, especially in the pursuit of justice, peace, and human flourishing. Originally from Ohio, Sarah has called the Washington metropolitan area home since 2002. She shares her life with her husband, two sons, and two sweet pit-mix pups. Sarah earned her Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on September 9, 2023. She is also a trained Spiritual Director through the Charlotte Spirituality Center and leads retreats focused on spiritual practices, prayer, discernment, and deepening one's awareness of God's presence and activity in daily life. During her time at seminary, Sarah served as an intern at Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria and as a seminarian at St. David's in Ashburn and St. John's in McLean. She completed Clinical Pastoral Education and served as a chaplain at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. Sarah has also served as Director of Music and Lay Ministry Lead for Mission and Outreach at St. Peter's in the Woods in Fairfax Station, her sending parish. Before attending seminary, Sarah taught music and chorus in Fairfax County Public Schools and worked as a vocal coach, soloist, and choral section leader. Music remains an important part of Sarah's spiritual life and ministry, shaping both her faith and her approach to community building. When she is not at church, Sarah enjoys creating art, gardening, singing in choirs, cooking and sharing great meals, and treasure hunting in thrift and antique stores. |
