Senior Adult Ministry and Fellowship
Immanuel’s congregation includes a vibrant community of older adults who are active participants in all aspects of parish life. The mission of Senior Ministry and Fellowship is to support them in their faith journey with educational and fellowship opportunities of special interest to seniors, links to important resources, and programs that help to integrate all generations spiritually.

News and Upcoming EventsMarch 2025TUESDAY, MARCH 25 @ 12:15 PM Senior Adult Ministry Fourth Tuesday Brown Bag Lunch with Tom Kerns, Zabriskie Parish Hall
We are welcoming our own Tom Kerns to return to the Senior Ministry and Fellowship brown bag in March. Architect par excellence, Tom will be sharing his experience with the renovation of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Georgetown. Trinity, founded in 1787, is the oldest Roman Catholic community in continuous operation is Washington, DC. Please join other seniors to hear Tom talk about his work at this historic parish at our brown bag lunch on Tuesday, March 25, at 12:15pm in the parish hall. Bring your own sandwich or salad, and we will provide dessert and drinks. There is no reservation requirement and no cost to this event and, as always, friends, neighbors, and family members are welcome. Tom will follow up his talk by taking us to visit the parish on Thursday, April 24. Please put that date on your calendar and watch for details of the trip later. MONDAY, MARCH 31 @ 10:30 AM-3:30 PM: Senior Adult Ministry and Fellowship Field Trip to the National Arboretum
We have a forecast for peak cherry blossom blooming, and plan to take full advantage by heading to the National Arboretum to do hanami (the Japanese word for cherry blossom viewing). We will be going on Monday, March 31, and grandchildren are especially welcome to join us on this trip. The Arboretum’s 40 discrete varieties of cherry blossom tree are spread out over 27 sites within almost 450 acres, so we will employ the van to get us from place to place. We will hope for hanafubuki, the experience of having a gust of wind shower our vehicle with blossoms swirling in the air. We will also visit the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum for the fascinating exhibit, Sakura Orihon, Diary of a Cherry Blossom Journey. We will gather in the parish hall at 10:30am for a quick brunch of quiche and fruit before leaving the Zabriskie parking lot at 11:15am, and plan to return no later than 3:30pm. You can also have the van pick you up and drop you off at either Goodwin House location or at The View (but alas, no quiche for you). There is no cost for the lunch and a $20 copay to ride in the van. Please RSVP to Karen Besser as soon as possible, so that if we have significant response to this trip there will be enough time to schedule a second van. |
"Stewardship of Retirement"
Retirement for most of us describes about one-third of our lives. Yet for many, planning for it seldom goes beyond questions of adequate income, a keen anticipation of some things we won't have to do anymore and a vague notion of leisure. These things are essential, but life is much more.
The "Stewardship of Retirement" Seminar was led by Immanuel parishioner The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Wade at Immanuel on September 27, 2014. Participants included both those contemplating retirement and those already retired. A series of break-out sessions drilled down on the issues of leaving one pattern of life and establishing a new one. The first video below is the introduction by Dr. Wade. Below that are shorter videos of his comments preceding each of the break-out sessions.
